WINDOW E1, “ST. STEPHEN,” BOARDMAN MEMORIAL

This window is thought to have been installed by 1895.  The La Farge Catalogue Raisonné records that George Dana Boardman was the first husband of Edward Judson’s mother, Sarah Hall Boardman Judson.

 St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, whose story is told in the Acts of the Apostles, chapters 6 and 7, is depicted as a young man in a full frontal pose.  He clasps his robes about him and looks upward.  Stephen is often depicted holding palms as a symbol of martyrdom.

 The window was two inscriptions below the saint.  The upper one reads:  “STEPHEN / A MAN FULL OF / FAITH AND OF / THE HOLY SPIRIT / ACTS 6:5.”  The lower reads, on the left side: “IN MEMORY / OF”; in the center, “GEORGE DANA / BOARDMAN”; and on the right, “BORN [illeg] / DIED [illeg]”.

 One of La Farge’s sketches for this window exists; it shows only the figure.
