“‘Queer’ not as being about who you're having sex with (that can be a dimension of it); but ‘queer’ as being about the self that is at odds with everything around it and has to invent and create and find a place to speak and to thrive and to live.” - bell hooks, 2014

WELCOME TO QUEER SPIRIT @ JUDSON!

IN OUR NEW MONTHLY SESSION FORMAT!

FAQ’s & INFO for CURIOUS SEEKERS of ALL STRIPES…(and PLAIDS)

While this space is open to and celebrates queer-identified folks, it is explicitly a space for troubling queerness as a politics/praxis and open to all who wish to experience, explore, and gain some facility in “queering” as a tool/approach to faith and life. Feel free to write to micah@judson.org or mxemoss@gmail.com with questions!

Here are answers to some of the questions we get asked a lot, in the meanwhile: What should I expect at a queer spirit gathering?

Our hour-long sessions follow a "Lectio Divina" inspired model, with community readings of a group of texts provided by Micah and Elæ. The group is then invited to engage in quiet contemplation and response to each text, followed by group discussion around reading themes alongside engagement with the project / process of "queering" spirituality. Each session always includes a bit of introductory grounding in Queer Theology -- and what this means as a mode of politics / spiritual praxis -- especially for those who are attending for the first time. We'll also give some context on any materials provided to deepen our relationship to the time, place, and human landscape of what we're responding to.

Do I need to prepare for sessions? Is there homework or any other expectation for work I do on my own?

Nope! You are welcome to arrive as you are, with no prior experience or preparation required. You don't need to have any familiarity with any of these ideas or the materials we're providing! That said, we also know that some may wish to spend time with the texts on their own before

and after, and so we do send materials around alongside other prompts and exercises for engaging more deeply with what we've shared, whether in writing or prayer or conversation.

Can I access sessions I've missed, materials from other sessions, or see what the summer series was like? (Also, perhaps you’re now asking, “wait, there was a summer series?”)

We know that everyone has different capacities for engagement, and we want this work we love so much to be available to everyone at your own pace! We'll continue to send recordings and materials to this listserv for each session, as well as add them to the Queer Spirit Community Folder. There *was* a summer series, for six consecutive weeks in the summer of 2024 in tandem with our “Q in Question” sermon series. The summer materials are all in the folder for your exploration!

You mentioned there’s a folder? Where do I find it?

The community folder for all Queer Spirit Series Materials -> is HERE

Our Summer Session Recordings and Materials --> are HERE

But wait! There’s even a Queer Spirit PLAYLIST on Spotify, which you can suggest songs for! Sometimes songs are sacred texts, in our queer-ed take on the holy! (More on that to come…)
